Breast Feeding Awareness

St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children Raises Awareness of Breastfeeding

PHILADELPHIA, July 28, 2014 — To celebrate National Breastfeeding Awareness Month in August, St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children will host a breastfeeding awareness week August 4-8, 2014 at the hospital, located at 160 East Erie Avenue in Philadelphia, PA.

The event will help raise awareness for the importance of breastfeeding and provide helpful information to hospital employees and the community. Throughout the week, tables with informative materials on breastfeeding, staffed by St. Christopher’s employees, will be set up in three locations: the Lower Atrium at the main hospital, in Ambulatory Pediatrics on the first floor of the main hospital, and in the lobby of the Nelson Pavilion, located across the parking lot from the hospital.
St. Christopher’s currently has a hospital-based Breastfeeding Committee comprised of nurses, and Certified Breastfeeding Counselors (CBC). A CBC is a person who receives training and competency verification in breastfeeding, knowledge of milk production, prevention and management of breastfeeding complications, feeding difficulties and handling and storage of breast milk. The group assists mothers who are learning to breastfeed, as well as provides support and education to breastfeeding or pumping mothers and staff.

“Currently, our group sees about 170 newborns per month,” says Deborah Sandrock, MD, International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC), physician at St. Christopher’s. We assist moms in obtaining personal items to help with breastfeeding and work closely with home care visiting nurses who are involved with our patients. We also have a MILK warmline that provides breastfeeding support to moms if they have questions or concerns between appointments.”

The purpose of the Breastfeeding Committee at St. Christopher’s is to increase the rates of breastfeeding at St. Christopher’s and to raise awareness of the benefits of breastfeeding and breastmilk. Lactation Consultant services are a part of outpatient newborn visits for breastfeeding families, as well.

“Breastfeeding may help to lower the risk of SIDS in babies, as well as reduce the risk of Type 2 Diabetes, childhood leukemia, ear infections, obesity and asthma,” says Dr. Sandrock. “Breast milk is also easier to digest than formula and is rich in nutrients and antibodies.”

Dr. Sandrock adds that breastfeeding may also lower the risk of Type 2 Diabetes, breast cancer, ovarian cancer and postpartum depression in women.

Watch as Ghiggeri Enviornmental takes Mama’s Little Helper from a Weedfest Backyard in Lambertville NJ to a Zen, Low Maintenance,Tranquil Outdoor Garden Living Area

Mama Chrissy’s Backyard Is Now an Extension of the Rest of the Home

My Personal Backyard Makeover in Lambertville New Jersey by Michael Ghiggeri from Ghiggeri Environmental Gives Mama Chrissy & Daughter More Living Space to Enjoy

Michael Ghiggeri Environmental Landscaper

Michael Ghiggeri Environmental Landscaper Starts My Backyard Project

It all started when I rented this quaint house in Lambertville last Summer. Soon after I moved in, Lambertville NJ was voted as 1 of the 15 most prettiest towns in the US by Forbes Magazine. My backyard did not help Lambertville achieve this special honor. When I opened my back door I saw this….

Michael Ghiggeri Enviornmental LandscaperMichael Ghiggeri Environmental Landscaper

I asked around for a reputable landscaper through all my online and offline communities and networks, and I found Michael Ghiggeri, from Ghiggeri Environmental as being highly recommended, especially as an Environmental Landscaper in New Jersey . Michael met me at our home within days of me reaching out. He listened to how I wanted to use the postage size backyard space, and he saw the potential of giving me exactly what we wanted, for the price I needed.  I was amazed at how easy it was for him to look past the tall weeds, oversize bushes, broken planters, busted fence sections with various things in random locations as he started pointing out ideas right then and there to deliver exactly what my daughter & I wanted. He knew we wanted our backyard to be an extension of our home and personalities, as well as fulfill the need for my daughter and myself to play in the dirt together, planting some annuals, vegetables and spices.

Michael Ghiggeri Environmental Landscaper Works on My Backyard Project

Michael Ghiggeri Enviornmental Landscaper

Michael Ghiggeri Enviornmental LandscaperSince our space is small, Michael suggested using a trellis for the back fence area where we can grow cucumbers and other vegetables that will grow upward on a trellis. Building it himself, saved money and we got exactly what we needed to bring the Zen feeling and the trellis fit perfectly in the space he designed for. Michael could tell from my home, personality and speaking with me that I wanted a tranquil, low maintenance, Zen backyard with comfortable living room-like furniture, a water feature, and a fire pit to roast marshmallows or keep warm on a chilly evening.  The fire pit we choose can also serve as a grill or cooler. The water feature is powered by a small solar panel. If you know Lambertville, you know most of the backyards are tiny, square spaces, so I was asking for a lot in a very little space.  His first order of business would be to completely clean out the backyard space of everything that had to go. As Michael is an Environmental Landscaper, it’s important for him to recycle things from job-to-job which helps him keep costs lower than competitors. For example, I needed a few more blue slates and he had some extra from another job that was removing blue slate. In return, I had to remove a big, beautiful butterfly bush, because whoever planted it in this small space, didn’t realize how big this magnificent beauty would grow. I had several butterfly bushes in my previous home that I just loved, so it was hard letting this bush go, but I’m sure Michael found a home for it in someone else’s project. I feel better knowing things removed from my backyard weren’t thrown away. I’ve always had a reverence for all things living, so throwing away a living bush would not work for me.

I can’t wait for all the days my daughter and I can go out back this Spring and enjoy our new space! If you would like to hire Michael, call or email him now. He is busy, but will make time for you! Tell him you heard about him through MamasLittleHelper.org

Amazing as I watched Michael transform my weed-fest into a Zen atmosphere for me, my daughter and our guests!

Mama’s question of the week: What are your fall family traditions?

It’s officially fall in Bucks County, Montgomery County, and surrounding region, which means Halloween will be here soon.  Everywhere I travel I see pumpkin signs advertising area pumpkin patches.  Our family likes to visit Solly Farm each fall to go apple picking and to visit their pumpkin patch.  They have a hay ride to the apple orchard on the weekends that gives a little tour of the farm.  There is a HUGE pumpkin on the side of the farm market at Solly Farm that I like to photograph my son next to each year to see how much he has grown.   Last year we also went to None Such Farms on the weekend to their Pumpkin Festival where we were able to enjoy a hayride and tour of the farm, some fun music and get some light lunch before checking out the pumpkin patch.  There are many area fall festivals and pumpkin festivals listed on Mama’s calendar, so if you are looking for some ideas, start there!  What are some fall traditions you have with your family or ones you are thinking of starting?

Solly Farms huge pumpkin!
